What mother hasn’t asked the question, “ How can I get my kids to eat better?”
Today, childhood obesity is the number one health concern of parents in the U.S. (topping drug abuse and smoking). Sadly, one in 3 children and teens is overweight or obese, (nearly triple the rate in 1963). This national problem is putting our children at risk for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, elevated blood lipid levels, liver problems, sleep apnea and some cancers. Furthermore, obesity can have a negative impact on a child’s self esteem , behavior, friendships, and academic performance. Please note, overweight children can also be undernourished by over consuming calories but under consuming important nutrients.
As a registered dietitian and mother myself, I am committed to resolving both hunger and obesity. One of my favorite recommendations for helping children learn to make healthy food choices and establish lifelong healthy eating habits is to cook and eat together as a family! (Join the CHOPCHOP cooking club free and pledge to cook dinner together once a month for 6 months.) Research has shown that children involved in choosing and preparing meals are more interested in eating what they’ve created. That’s why I’m so excited about today’s giveaway: a one year subscription to ChopChop Magazine and a $25 Cabot Cheese Gift Box.
Must be a U.S. resident and at least 18 years old to participate. Contest ends at midnight, Oct. 24, 2015.

we like making applesauce with apples we picked from the orchard !
What a terrific way for kids to see ‘farm to table’ in action.
Great post Diane! My girls love making pretty much anything with me, but especially things they can really do at 3 1/2, like pizza and whisking batter for cookies or a cake. They also love using the hand juicer, although we do hand over hand since they’re not quite strong enough yet!
Wow! At 3 1/2 they have a great start. So much they will learn to do if they are already involved.
Peanut butter and pepper jack treats
Yum! We shouldn’t overlook that fact that making snacks can be a great place to get kids involved!
My family likes to cook different international cuisines.
Wow, this is wonderful. They are not only learning how to cook, but about other cultures. So nice.
Homemade pasta is always fun to make with children. Everyone loves putting the dough sheets through the machine and turning out their own spaghetti or cavatelli.
You are an angel!
I like making pizza and baking cookies with my kids. They are getting to be the age where I can have them use the cook top and oven on their own.
Baking is how I first got involved with cooking! Love it.
I like to cook a lot. Something I like to make with the kids is build your own taco night with all the toppings.
Tacos are another family friendly meal. Glad that you hae a taco night and allow your kids to ‘build their own”!
We love to make pizza together as a family and would love to win this one thanks for the chance and have a nice day.
It’s so great to hear families making pizza together and not ordering take out! Wonderful!!!
I like to make homemade mac and cheese with my son, he puts the cheeses in for me and stirs. I love to make it with bacon and shallots too! 🙂 Thanks for the chance!
You are welcome, Brenda. Youor mac & Cheese sounds ymmy. I like that you include your son when you prepare this comfort food!
Pizza is our favorite thing to cook as a family. It is one of the few things where the kids can help and actually still be helping. They love to decorate their own mini pizzas.
Topping their own pizza is a terrific way to get you kids involved in the kitchen! I love that it allows them to create their ‘own’ mini pizza!
