Wouldn’t it be great to be able to fight pediatric cancer with something as simple as cookies? Well, now you can, thanks to Gretchen and Larry Witt, two OXO employees and founders of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a non-profit organization that supports pediatric cancer research. Let me tell you a little bit about these two special people. Gretchen and Larry’s inspiration comes from a very personal loss in their lives – their son Liam who bravely battled cancer for 4 years. Unfortunately, pediatric cancer is the number one killer of children under 18 years of age in the U.S. The Witts have committed to change this by establishing Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a nonprofit seeking to raise funds for researching new and better therapies for pediatric cancer. OXO has joined Cookies for Kids’ Cancer in their mission by donating up to $100,000 to the nonprofit organization.
You too can be a “good cookie”! Here are some ways you can help fund pediatric cancer research and increase awareness about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer:
Send a virtual cookie or host a bake sale or fundraising event for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. Register your bake sale now until Dec. 31, 2011 and OXO will match all proceeds up to $100,000. Please visit www.oxogoodcookies.com for more information.
Purchase a Limited Edition Cookie Spatula at your nearest Bed Bath & Beyond or www.amazon.com or check the store locator at www.oxogoodcookies.com to find a local retailer. Fifty percent of the profits support Cookies for Kids’ Cancer up to $100,000. This spatula is etched with the message, “be a good cookie”. Another feature I like is that it combines the strength of stainless steel with the advantages of silicone- especially helpful at high temperatures, even as high a 400 degrees F. This tool is not just for cookies! I have used mine this week to make pancakes, paninis and vegetable stuffed egg white omelets.
Today I am using the OXO limited edition “good cookie” spatula while baking classic chocolate chip cookies. The recipe I am following is from the America Institute for Cancer Research test kitchens. Two “good cookies” are helping me, my daughter Sydney, and her friend Elizabeth.
Sydney and Elizabeth are both pictured with the “good cookie” spatula. You can see from the picture (on right) the angled handle keeps Elizabeth’s hand away from the hot cookie sheet. While dropping cookie dough onto a cookie sheet today I realized the spatula’s rounded corner (Sydney is showing off the rounded corners below) is great for getting sticky cookie dough out of a spoon. I will be honest, this is not only a functional spatula with the same great quality you always get with OXO kitchen tools, it is also the cutest gadget in my kitchen! I want to thank OXO for sending me two of them, one to use in today’s post and one to give away! To enter the contest, please do one of the following:
• Tweet this post to help spread the word about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer.
• Like this post on facebook.
Remember to leave me a comment indicating which way you have helped to spread the news about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer! Don’t wait, the contest will end on Dec. 18.
