Yesterday I posted my strategy for going to the fair and enjoying it, even some food! I suggested picking one item (the one you’re craving) and savoring it. I also mentioned that for anyone pinning me down on my picks for a better bad choice, I can and will oblige. This is that post!
So, I don’t have to disclose the nutritional ‘value’ of funnel cake, fried Oreos, and fried dough. You already know these aren’t the foods that healthy bodies are made of! So, are there any foods at the fair that have less calories and fat than a stick of butter? Yes, and I will gladly reveal my three picks for treating yourself and/or your kids at the Cape Fear Fair and Expo:
Number 1. Frozen banana. I was thrilled to see one of the concession vendors offering this! A great choice for both kids and adults, this frozen treat comes on a stick and is dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with nuts right before your eyes. Yes, you can even hold the nuts or go light on chocolate if you desire.
Number 2. Cotton Candy. Yeah, I know this is all sugar, but believe it or not there is less sugar in a 1 oz serving of cotton candy than there is in a 12 oz can of soda. Make this your one treat at the fair and you can leave with spending only 100 calories. Not bad for a trip to the fair, eh?
Number 3. Chicken Philly Cheesesteak, sans the cheese. This choice is for those of you who forgot to take my advice from the last blog post, when I suggested you eat before you
come. If you’re making a meal at the fair, don’t load up on carbohydrates. I suggest something with protein, because it has staying power and will keep you feeling full longer. Remember: if you can’t satisfy your hunger, you will feel the urge to continue to graze. The chicken Philly cheesesteak is a boneless skinless chicken breast cut into bite sized pieces and grilled along with onions and green peppers, topped with a cheese sauce and served on a hoagie roll. Hold the cheese and save the added calories, fat and sodium.
Remember, on a day to day basis you want the majority of your calories to come from wholesome foods including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources (including lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, nut and legumes) and non fat dairy. If you ascribe to these nutritional guidelines, a once a year trip to the fair is not deniable.
What do you plan on treating yourself to at the fair?
