I haven’t had much time lately to get lost in a good book. But after reviewing my schedule for the next month, I see I have a two-plus hour layover in Dallas on my way to Manhattan, Kansas. Hmm, looks like I just found reading time!
This is great news for me because I have been itching to read a book. What book? A romance? Mystery? No. I think it’s somewhat of a recipe book, but not the type Paula Dean would have written. Rather, a recipe book for the optimal strategies for living a long full life.
Let me explain. Back in April I attended the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness conference in Baltimore, Maryland. One of my favorites sessions was a presentation given by Dan Buettner, New York Times best selling author and explorer extraordinaire. Buettner explained how a community health experiment transformed an ordinary American city. Specifically, life expectancy was increased by three years, 12,000 pounds was shed from waistlines, and healthcare costs of city workers plummeted by 40%.
After listening to Beuttner’s inspiring story, I became very curious about his book, The Blue Zone, where he addresses the realities of aging head on. His advice is evidence-based and embodies the latest research from longevity experts. Buettner and his team traveled to places around the globe where healthy aging is the norm, now referred to as the “Blue Zones”. His team scientifically gained understanding of longevity by investigating the lifestyles and habits of the people living the longest, healthiest lives. After countless hours of research, they now offer practical ideas for you to create your own “Blue Zone “. Believe it or not, with this book stashed in my hobo bag, I am looking forward to that two hour layover in the Dallas airport!
What’s on your summer reading list?

I have heard of this book, but have not yet read it. Interested to hear your thoughts. I also struggle to find time to read a book…maybe this one will be next on my list.

jbunny,
Dan Buettner was an amazing speaker; I have great expectations for his book! I sometimes find myself somewhere with time to read but no book. Sort of like being hungry without food. If you can, try to keep a book with you. When time opens up, what you want to read will be available.
